MLS team risks upsetting Chelsea by confirming transfer early

Mauricio Pochettino praises Raheem Sterling after Chelsea's win against Luton

New England Revolution spoiled Chelsea’s unveiling of Djordje Petrovic after posting the news moments before the Premier League club. The MLS franchise revealed the departure of their goalkeeper via their media channels early and seemingly ruined any surprise Chelsea had of a grand unveiling.

Petrovic comes highly rated having impressed in MLS. The 23-year-old has featured in 43 regular season games for the Revolution keeping 14 clean sheets in the process.

The shot-stopper has helped his team to enjoy a strong start to the season and a top spot in the Eastern Conference. The franchise has only lost four games all season and currently sits in second place behind Cincinnati, with a final series place all but confirmed.

The Serbian will now have to watch the team from afar after agreeing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option to extend another year. However, his first day at the club hasn’t all gone to plan.

As with most signings, the club acquiring the player usually makes the announcement with a post via social media. The Revolution decided that they would be the ones to break the news with a post on the club’s website, spoiling any surprise that Chelsea had planned.

Despite any element of surprise, Chelsea fans reacted with elation to the transfer on social media. “Our new Petr Cech,” one fan posted with another adding: “I feel like this will go down as one of them unreal underrated signings”

New England Revolution fans were less enthusiastic about the news, with one fan replying: “Sold our title hopes for 15m” and another simply adding: “Season is over.”

Revolution technical director Curt Onalfo was among those expressing their sadness to see the Serbian leave the club. “Djordje Petrović has been an extremely valuable member of our club and a consummate professional during his time in New England,” he said in a statement.

“We thank Djordje for all of his contributions to the Revolution during his time with the club. We wish him all the best at Chelsea.”

On completing his transfer, Petrovic said: “I’m so happy to be at Chelsea and I’m really excited to get started at this club. It’s a big step for me and it’s always been a dream of mine to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Today I have achieved that goal and I’m so happy.

“Playing in the Premier League is something I’m really looking forward to doing and I hope to learn many things here at Chelsea. I can’t wait to meet everyone and play at Stamford Bridge.”

Petrovic could feature when Chelsea plays AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at Stamford Bridge.
