World’s richest tennis player necked can of Heineken before drug test at US Open

Jessica Pegula chugged a can of Heineken after her US Open elimination – in order to speed up the drug testing process.

The 29-year-old, who is currently ranked No.3 in the world, sipped on the alcoholic beverage in September of 2022 after losing at the quarter-final stage to eventual winner Iga Swiatek.

Pegula had needed to top up her bladder before supplying a sample to drug testers, but shocked members of the media when opting for the 5% Dutch brew instead of the usually favoured bottled water.

Pegula returns to the US Open this week among the favourites having reached six Grand Slam singles quarter finals in recent years – but has not yet be able to make an appearance in the last four.

As well as her ability on the court, Pegula is known as the richest tennis player across both circuits as heir to billions.

Pegula's parents Terry and Kim are the owners of NFL side Buffalo Bills and NHL outfit Buffalo Sabres – with an estimated net worth of £5.4billion according to Forbes.

Pegula said back in 2020: "I know I was more privileged than other people. I'm aware of that. I try to be very down-to-earth, and I think I am."

Terry made his fortune in oil and gas, since creating a sports empire that includes the Bills and Buffalo Sabres.

Not one to sit back and relax, daughter Pegula has earned £8million in career prize money with another £2.38m on the line for the singles' winner in New York in early September.

Pegula has been drawn to take on Camila Giorgi in the first round of the tournament, having won six of her seven matches against the Italian in the past.

No.1 seed Swiatek will go into the tournament as the favourite having won three of the last Grand Slam singles' titles on offer.

The 22-year-old has four triumphs to her name in total, recently going on a 37 game winning streak to break WTA records in the 21st century.

British interest comes in the form of Yuriko Miyazaki, who has already reached the second round, as well as Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage.
